The most important prehistoric site is Filitosa , northwest of Propriano, where a collection of extraordinary carved menhirs were discovered in 1946. The Filitosa menhirs are highly unusual: several have detailed faces, anatomical features (such as ribcages) and even swords and armour, suggesting that they may commemorate specific warriors or chieftains.
