Burghers of Calais

TIME : 2016/2/18 18:09:23

In front of Calais' Flemish Renaissance-style town hall (1911–25) is Rodin's famous statue Les Bourgeois de Calais (The Burghers of Calais; 1895), honouring six local citizens who, in 1347, held off the besieging English forces for more than eight months. Edward III was so impressed he ultimately spared the Calaisiens and their six leaders.
