Markt

TIME : 2016/2/18 19:24:28

One of the tragedies of Hitler’s excursion into megalomania was the horrendous damage inflicted upon once-magnificent architectural gems such as Hildesheim. After WWII, key parts of the old town were lovingly reconstructed, and the result of this is especially visible on Markt. Clockwise (from north) you find the Rokokohaus , Wollenweberhaus , Wedekindhaus , Knochenhauerhaus (Butchers’ Guild Hall) and Bäckeramtshaus (Bakers’ Guild Hall, today containing the town museum). The Marktbrunnen , a fountain in front of the Rathaus on the east side of the square, has bells that play folk songs at noon, 1pm and 5pm daily. Bus 1 from Hauptbahnhof to Rathausstrasse drops you close.
