Fussen

One of the most popular holiday destinations in the Bavarian Alps, the resort town of Füssen is one of Germany’s most scenic, framed by snow-capped mountains and glistening lakes. Boasting a strategic position in the heart of the Alps and just a short drive from the Austrian border, Füssen also lies at the southern tip of the famous Romantic Road tourist trail, making it a perfect base for exploring the region’s many attractions.
Dating back over 700 years, Füssen’s historic Old Town is an attractive mix of historic architecture and winding medieval lanes, set at a height of 1,200 meters (3,940 feet) overlooking the River Lech. Visiting the town’s gothic High Castle, along with the nearby Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau castles, is a favorite pastime of visitors, but there’s more to Füssen than just castles. Take a trip to the UNESCO World Heritage listed Wieskirche church; marvel at Germany’s oldest fresco in the crypt of St Mang’s Benedictine Monastery; get clued up on local history and traditions at the Füssen Heritage Museum; or head into the mountains for a day of hiking, mountain biking or skiing. If you’re lucky enough to visit during the festive season, the Old Town also hosts a celebrated Christmas market, or else summer visitors can make the most of the warmer weather by swimming in the lakes.
