Bamberg

One of the principal sights on Germany’s famous Castle Road, the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Bamberg is one of Europe’s largest intact medieval towns, with many of its historic buildings beautifully preserved. Boasting 1,000 years of history, Bamberg is a masterpiece of medieval architecture and despite being a lively center of arts and culture, tradition still reigns in the modern city. Time-honored events like the International Magician and Street Performers’ Festival and the summer Sandkirchweihf Folk Festival remain hugely popular and offer plenty of opportunities to witness local traditions and sample regional food and beers.
Few towns are as undeniably picturesque as Bamberg and the main attraction is wandering the maze of snaking alleyways, timber-fronted houses and antique shops, before whiling away the afternoon in one of the many hilltop beer gardens. The city is also proud of its beer brewing heritage and touring one of the town’s nine traditional breweries is a must for beer lovers.  Other key sights include the breathtaking Imperial Cathedral; the Old Town Hall, marooned on the River Regnitz; the medieval Old Court; and the exquisite Rose Garden of the New Residence.
