Medieval Ruins

TIME : 2016/2/18 22:14:46

Behind the cathedral are two medieval ruins sitting in lonely isolation surrounded by grass and grazing cattle: the Norman-built Ferns Cathedral and, with an unusual square-based round tower, St Mary's Abbey . Dermot MacMurrough founded it in 1158, inviting Augustinian monks to run a monastery here. An earlier Christian settlement founded in the same spot by St Aedan in 600 was destroyed by the Vikings.
