The Biblioteca Estense holds one of Italy’s most valuable collections of books, letters and manuscripts, including the celebrated Bibbia di Borso d’Este, a masterpiece of medieval illustration.

Archivio Storico
Records illustrating Iglesias past are kept in the Archivio Storico, the citys historical archive. Of particular interest is the 1327 Breve di Villa di Chiesa, the statute book of the medieval city.

Museo Diocesano Albani
The Duomos Museo Albani contains religious artefacts, vestments and more paintings, including Andrea da Bologna’s Madonna del Latte (Madonna Breastfeeding) and one by Giovanni Santi (Raphael’s father).

Next door to Pinacoteca Nazionale, this small museum exhibits documents, proclamations and posters from the Italian unification movement and WWII, as well as numerous uniforms, guns and hand grenades.

From Bagnolo, a series of winding country lanes leads southeast to Pojana Maggiore and another of Palladio’s designs just south out of town on the road to Legnago: the frescoed 1550 Villa Pojana.

Villa Mirabello Museum
Villa Mirabello houses the city’s main museum, of which only a modest section with Roman remnants is open. The villa is accessible through the Giardini Estensi, which was once a separate property.

Museo Demologico
Housed in part of San Giovanni in Fiores old abbey (the Abbazia Forense), the Museo Demologico exhibits tools from the towns strong artisan culture. Friendly staff will often give you a guided tour.

Museo delle Maschere Mediterranee
Get an idea of what Mamoidas carnival is all about at the Museo delle Maschere Mediterranee. The exhibit includes a multimedia presentation and garbed mannequins wearing their famous sheepskins.

Cattedrale di San Romolo
Fiesoles cathedral, begun in the 11th century, stands sentry over the central square. Look out for the glazed terracotta statue of San Romolo by Giovanni della Robbia guarding the entrance inside.
