Inland from Chiavari, you can lose the crowds and breathe fresh mountain air in the Parco Naturale Regionale dell’Aveto , a nature reserve at the northern end of the Val d’Aveto .

Lago Albano
This great azure expanse is simply glorious for a summer swim, and cafes and boating-hire places dot its banks. Filling two volcanic craters, the lake is about 3.5km by 2.3km.

Fontana delle Naiadi
This elegant fountain, built in 1888, was designed by Alessandro Guerrieri, who decorated it with four lions, which were replaced by sculptor Mario Rutellis bronze nymphs in 1901.

Castello dAvalos
Clinging onto Procidas highest point is the crumbling 16th-century Castello dAvalos, former Bourbon hunting lodge and ex-prison. You can soak in the dizzying bay views from here.

Chiesa di San Benedetto
Inside this church, built between 1704 and 1713, is some splendid stucco and marble work, as well as a rather graphic fresco of a woman being tortured in front of a curious sultan.

Casa d’Argo
This noble house would originally have opened onto Cardo II (as yet unearthed). Onto its porticoed, palm-treed garden open a triclinium (dining room) and other residential rooms.

Ara di Gerone II
West of the Roman amphitheatre is the 3rd-century-BC Ara di Gerone II. This monolithic sacrificial altar was a kind of giant abattoir where 450 oxen could be killed at one time.

Cattedrale di San Giuseppe
The facade is a lovely low-key example of Romanesque architecture; the rest of the building was destroyed in 1566 when the city was sacked by the Turks, and later rebuilt.

Castello Aragonese Otranto
This squat, thick-walled fort, with the Charles V coat of arms above the entrance, has great views from the ramparts. There are some faded original murals and original cannonballs on display.
