Martinikerk

TIME : 2016/2/19 2:27:32

This huge 16th-century church commands the northeast corner of the Grote Markt. By any standard, the 96m-tall Martinitoren strikes a finely balanced profile. A climb to the summit (251 steps!) yields grand views and worrisome proximity to the giant bells. Purchase admission tokens at the VVV.

To the northeast the Martinikerkhof , a large square surrounded by historic houses, was used until 1837 as a graveyard. Particularly worthy of admiration is No 25 with an ornately carved gable, the former parsonage of the Sint Walburg church that once stood on the north side.
