Open to the North Sea, with both salt and brackish waters, this nature reserve is a haven for plant life including sea lavender and marsh samphire. Thousands of birds, such as waders and plovers, feed on sand, mud flats, and Oosterschelde estuary's salt marshes, wetlands and creeks behind the dykes. Marine life here includes many species of fish as well as seals and porpoises.
