Started in 1936 by the eponymous cigar magnate to boost his town's cultural profile, the Van Abbe holds a first-rate collection of modern art including works by Picasso, Chagall and Kandinsky. As impressive as the art is the building itself, comprising the original brick castle and a 2003 gray-stone addition that incorporates the cascading Dommel river.
