St Spiridons Monastery

TIME : 2016/2/19 0:24:33

One block northeast of the square, this monastery contains the headless body of Grigore Ghica III, killed in 1777 for opposing the Turks. The present structure dates from 1807, after an 1802 earthquake damaged everything but the original steeple tower (1786). Interestingly, some church inscriptions were written in Romanian – but with Cyrillic letters.
