This colossal monument commemorates the Red Army soldiers who took part in the 1917–23 Russian Civil War. The square was home to the Alexandro-Nevsky Cathedral until 1930, when it was destroyed by Soviet authorities. There is a miniature of the cathedral to the right of the monument.
