Built by the Genoese on the steep hill at the back of town, Rize's ancient kale has both a Lower Castle and the so-called Inner Castle above it. The latter contains a cafe with sweeping coastal views. To reach the castle head west of the main square along Atatürk Caddesi. Some 50m past the Petrol Ofisi gas station and opposite the Türkcell shop, turn left up Kale Sokak. A taxi here is ₺8.
