St George Greek Orthodox Cathedral

TIME : 2016/2/17 17:58:09

This church in the Place d’Étoile was built in 1767, and is one of the oldest buildings in the city. In 1975, during the civil war, a bomb fell here and unearthed the ruins of a Byzantine church. Now open as a museum, the ruins incorporate Byzantine mosaic floors and a number of tombs – one with with a skeleton. A seven-minute documentary in English, French and Arabic gives an informative overview of the cathedral’s history.

The chapel behind the cathedral has a number of religious frescos, some damaged during the war and still bearing bullet holes. The church itself was largely rebuilt after the bomb, and its early-20th century frescoes were restored.
