Cordova Museum

TIME : 2016/2/18 11:03:44

Adjacent to the Cordova Library, this museum is a small, grassroots collection worth seeing. Displays cover local marine life, relics from the town’s early history – including a captivating lighthouse lens – and a three-seater bidarka (kayak) made from spruce pine and 12 sealskins.

Want your heart wrenched? Peruse the museum’s coverage of the Exxon Valdez oil spill. The amateur photos and local newspaper headlines revive the horror more vividly than any slick documentary. Then there’s the jar of oily sediment collected in 2006 – nearly 20 years after the spill.

The museum will have a new home across the street in the Cordova Center Auditorium, which has faced numerous delays, but is slated to open in summer 2015.
