Sheldon Jackson Museum

TIME : 2016/2/18 11:16:11

East along Lincoln St on the former campus of Sheldon Jackson College is Sheldon Jackson Museum. The college may be gone, but this fine museum survived because the state of Alaska purchased it in 1983. The unusual building, the first concrete one in Alaska, is home to a small but excellent collection of indigenous Alaska artifacts gathered between 1888 and 1898 by Dr Sheldon Jackson, a minister and federal education agent in Alaska.

Among the artifacts are Alaska Native masks, hunting tools and baskets, and a collection of boats and sleds used in Alaska – from reindeer sleds and dogsleds to umiaks (kayaks).
