Bearskin Neck is the peninsula that juts into the harbor, lined with galleries, lobster shacks and souvenir shops.
The name Bearskin Neck apparently comes from a historic account of a young boy who was attacked by a bear. In an attempt to save the boy, his uncle, Ebenezer Babson, went after the bear with the only weapon he had available at the time – his fish knife. Babson managed to kill the bear and save the child, and then he skinned the bear and laid the pelt on the rocks to dry. The legend lives on in rhyme: 'Babson, Babson, killed a bear, with his knife, I do declare.'
