When the lava flow of January 1960 approached Cape Kumukahi, it parted around the lighthouse, which survived. Old-timers say that the lighthouse keeper offered a meal to Pele, who appeared disguised as an old woman on the eve of the disaster, and so she spared the structure. Today, the lighthouse is just a tall piece of white-painted metal scaffolding, at the end of an unpaved 1.5-mile road from Four Corners.
This is the easternmost point in the state, where you can breathe some of the freshest air in the world.
