In 1890 Tabasco founder EA McIlhenny also started a bird sanctuary on Avery Island (home of the McIlhenny Tabasco Factory). At Jungle Gardens you can drive or walk through 250 acres of subtropical jungle flora and view an amazing array of water birds (especially snowy egrets, which nest here in astounding number), turtles and alligators. Watch for turtles and peacocks crossing the road.
