Two hours north of Silver City, up a winding 42-mile road, is Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument , occupied in the 13th century by Mogollons. Mysterious and relatively isolated, these remarkable cliff dwellings are easily accessed from a 1-mile loop trail and look very much as they would have at the turn of the first millennium.
