Behind the police station (west of the ferry terminal), the Staten Island Museum offers a small, eclectic booty of artifacts, covering topics as diverse as local history and natural science. One permanent display explores the boat you just rode in on. There’s a second branch at Snug Harbor, covered by the same ticket.
