Two miles south of Lowell center, Kerouac is buried in the Sampas family plot at Edson Cemetery . His gravesite remains a pilgrimage site for devotees who were inspired by his free spirit.

Edgar Allan Poe Cottage
The renovated Poe Cottage is where author Edgar Allan Poe (1809–49) lived for three years at the end of his life. It’s here that he penned his famous poems ‘Annabel Lee’ and ‘The Bells.’

Cathedral Basilica of St Augustine
With its magnificent bell tower lording it over the Plaza de la Constitution, this Spanish-mission-style cathedral is likely the countrys first Catholic house of worship. Masses are held daily.

Bond Chapel
The Bond Chapel is serene. Built in 1926, the exquisite 300-seat chapel is the harmonious creation of the architects, sculptors, woodcarvers and glassmakers who worked together on the project.

Billy the Kid Scenic Byway
This mountain-and-valley loop in southeastern New Mexico swoops past Billy the Kids stomping grounds, Smokey Bears gravesite and the orchard-lined Hondo Valley. From Roswell, take Hwy 380 west.

Asticou Azalea Garden
Designed in 1900, this simply lovely 200-acre garden is laced with paths, little shelters and ornamental Japanese-style bridges. Azaleas and rhododendrons bloom profusely from mid-May to mid-June.

Sequoia Park
A 77-acre old-growth redwood grove is a surprising green gem in the middle of a residential neighborhood. It has biking and hiking trails, a children’s playground and picnic areas, and a small zoo .

Railway Museum of San Angelo
The beautifully renovated Santa Fe Depot is home to much railroad nostalgia. The station, on the El Paseo, is the main attraction. Inside, the museum has models of 1920s San Angelo and old rail cars.

Minnesota Childrens Museum
The Minnesota Childrens Museum has the usual gamut of hands-on activities, as well as a giant anthill to burrow through, and the One World intercultural community where kids can shop and vote.

Oasis
Oasis is the first themed section of Animal Kingdom. It has cool critters, including a giant anteater, but its best to move along to other attractions and pause to enjoy the animals on your way out.

Cliveden of the National Trust
Cliveden of the National Trust was the summer home of wealthy Benjamin Chew. It was built in 1760 and used as a de facto stronghold in the Battle of Germantown during the Revolutionary War in 1777.

Frontier Historical Museum
Tucked into a quiet, leafy neighborhood, this community museum has an excellent collection of historic photos and old maps. The staff are history buffs: they host the annual Linwood Cemetery Ghost Walk.

Hyde Collection Art Museum
In nearby Glens Falls, the remarkable Hyde Collection, housed in the Hyde Collection Art Museum , an impressive 1912 Florentine Renaissance−style villa, includes works by Rembrandt, Degas and Matisse.

Huleʻia National Wildlife Refuge
On the north side of the Huleʻia River lies the 240-acre Huleʻia National Wildlife Refuge, a breeding ground for endemic waterfowl. The refuge is closed to the public, except for guided kayaking tours.

Hibbing Public Library
The library has well-done displays on local boy Bob Dylan and a free walking-tour map (available online, too) that takes you past various sites, like the place where Bobby had his bar mitzvah.

Great Lakes Science Center
One of 10 museums in the country with a NASA affiliation, Great Lakes goes deep in space with rockets, moon stones and the 1973 Apollo capsule, as well as exhibits on the lakes environmental problems.

Yaki Point
Dramatic views to both the east and west, Yaki Point is one of the best spots to catch a sunrise. Because its accessible year-round by shuttle or bicycle only, it tends to be a quieter overlook.

USS Albacore
Like a fish out of water, this 205ft-long submarine is now a beached museum on a grassy lawn. Launched from Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in 1953, the Albacore was once the worlds fastest submarine.
