Colton Point State Park
On the west rim of Pine Creek Gorge, this state park was partially developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps. The 1-mile Rim Trail gives good views over the canyon.

Alpine Historical Park
A picnic or photo-op stop, the park preserves several buildings, including the Chickaloon Bunkhouse and the original Sutton post office, which now houses a museum.

Castoro Cellars
Husband-and-wife team produces ‘dam fine wine’ (the mascot is a beaver, get it?), including from custom-crushed and organic grapes. Outdoor vineyard concerts happen during summer.

Casa de Carillo
Just north of Old Town, this house dates from about 1820 and is said to be the oldest house in San Diego. It is now the pro shop for the public 18-hole Presidio Hills Golf Course .

An enormous 1880 adobe with Victorian airs, this newish museum has evocative displays about Españolas days as a frontier mercantile community, era antiques and art exhibitions.

Bluemont produces ruby-red Nortons and crisp Viogniers, though it’s equally famous for its spectacular location – at a 950ft elevation with sweeping views over the countryside.

The NPS runs the Prairie Acadian Cultural Center with interesting exhibits on swamp life and Cajun culture, and a variety of documentaries explaining the history of the area.

Orlando before Disney? Permanent exhibits cover prehistoric Florida, European exploration, race relations and citrus production, with a re-created pioneer home and 1927 courtroom.

Parris Island Museum
This fascinating museum has antique uniforms and weaponry, and covers marine corps history. There are also a few rooms dedicated to local history. Dont miss the introductory movie.

National Eagle Center
An interpretive center about the big birds of prey thats also home to five rescued eagles. Located in Wabasha, where a large population of bald eagles congregates each winter.

With lots of multimedia displays, this museum is a solid introduction to the role of Jewish culture in the US in everything from entertainment to the Civil Rights movement.

Nevada Historical Society Museum
Near the University of Nevada Science Center, this museum includes permanent exhibits on neon signs, local Native American culture and the presence of the federal government.

Kraft Azalea Gardens
Quiet lakeside park with enormous cypress trees. Particularly stunning January through March, when the azaleas burst into bloom. Theres a dock, but no BBQs or picnic tables.

Hocking Hills State Park
Its splendid to explore in any season, with miles of trails for hiking and biking, as well as abundant campgrounds and cabins. Old Mans Cave is a scenic winner for hiking.
