Spiritual Journey

The Atikamekw people welcome visitors to their homeland, some 31,000 square miles of the province of Quebec, several hours north of Montréal. Here, in the boreal forest, the members of this First Nation fish, hunt, and farm the land where their ancestors have lived for centuries. The nation’s three-day cultural immersion tours include a stay in a tipi, canoe trips (the Atikamekw are known for the craftsmanship of their birch canoes), and introductions to the flora and fauna of the region. At night, you’ll eat fresh game and fish caught by your hosts from the area’s lakes as you sit around a campfire and learn about the people, and their history, language, and culture. There are few opportunities to “travel deeper” as fascinating as these trips with the Atikamekw.
