Ayuntamiento (Palacio Municipal)

The Municipal Palace of Merida faces the main plaza across from the cathedral and is probably the building most likely to appear in photos of the city. With its salmon-colored exterior, arches anchored by columns, and a clock tower rising from the center, it’s an impressive sight.

Built between 1734 and 1736, it was then refurbished in the 1730s and the 1850s. This is a working office building with a modern interior, so the exterior is more interesting to visitors. Adjoining it, however, is the Olimpo cultural center, a place to catch music, dance, or art shows. Consult the tourist office upon arrival to see what’s going on or check the sign posted outside. Most performances are free.
