Museum of the Island of Cozumel

Though the Museum of the Island of Cozumel - or Museo de la Isla de Cozumel - is small, it presents a wealth of wonderful exhibits, all well signed in both Spanish and English.

Professionally presented displays begin on the ground floor with the island's natural history. Fine examples from the famed coral reefs are a must for snorkelers and divers eager to learn more about Cozumel's undersea attractions. An interactive exhibit about the island's Mayan era features a curator wearing a period costume, and explaining indigenous culture in a traditional home.

Next, it's on to the era of Spanish galleons and British pirates, dueling it out on the Caribbean's high seas. Finally, you'll see Cozumel's transformation from a quiet backwater into an internationally known tourist destination. Researchers are welcome to use the onsite library.

Practical Info

The Museum of the Island of Cozumel is located within easy walking distance of either pier or the Plaza del Sol shopping district. You could probably breeze through the entire museum in less than an hour, but plan to spend some time at excellent Café El Museo. Enjoy drinks, light meals, and fabulous Caribbean views from their fine second-story porch, which must have been a favorite spot for guests at Cozumel's first upscale hotel.
