Up the flanks of Volcán Pichincha, this monument offers one of the finest views of the city. It was built at the site of the Batalla de Pichincha (Battle of Pichincha), which was which generaled by Mariscal Antonio José de Sucre. The May 24, 1822, battle was decisive in the struggle for independence from Spain. There is also a military museum and a tiled mural by Eduardo Kingman.

The best way to get to the site, which lies a few kilometers northwest of the Monastery of San Diego (and roughly 4km from the heart of Old Town), is by taxi.
