La Raya Pass

La Raya Pass

An endless panorama of rugged slopes, sweeping plains and jagged, snow-capped peaks, broken up by crops of bristly shrubs, bursts of wildflowers and herds of llama and alpaca grazing on the hillsides - traveling over La Raya Pass serves as a spectacular introduction to the Peruvian Andes.
The scenic mountain pass marks the border between Puno and Cusco, and lies on the main route for those heading north from Lake Titicaca, passable both by car and by train – Peru Rail’s luxurious Andean Explorer train famously passes over La Raya. The highest point, at a dizzying 14,300 feet, makes a popular stopping point, offering truly breath-taking views over the high plateaus and distant mountain peaks.
