In the barred pavilion on the plaza between the two churches, Iglesia de San Francisco and Iglesia de San Clemente, is the Cruz de San Clemente . This is said to be the cross used in the first mass celebrated after the town’s foundation. It’s made from the wood of the cují tree, a slow-growing species of acacia that is found in this arid region.
