"Thank you for flying Kulula. We hope you enjoyed giving us the business as much as we enjoyed taking you for a ride." Don't worry, they are just kidding! Kulula.com is an airline that can be described as humorous and light-hearted. They are one of three low cost domestic carriers operating in South Africa, along with Mango and 1Time. The Kulula brand is owned by Comair, the same company that operates British Airways flights in Southern Africa. Their shocking green aircraft and uniquely designed graphics set Kulula apart from the competition in this industry, especially when their most famous aircraft is the 'Flying 101' plane, where the design explains all the different parts of the plane, on the outside.

The airline's target market is described as 'Anyone who buys a ticket'. This would include the young, the elderly as well as businessmen and women. This has impacted their marketing strategy in such a way that they could continue their no-frills approach - not focusing on any specific segment.

Kulula offers food and drinks in-flight through a "buy on board" programme - just like Mango and 1time. In addition to their low cost flights, Kulula has expanded their services to include prepaid airtime and credit cards. These services now include further options of car rental and booking rooms at any Protea Hotel through their website. You can also request an Imperial chauffeur driver to give you a ride to the airport for R150. On top of these services, passengers have the opportunity to book an adventure or activity like shark cage diving or a visit to a health spa, when they buy a ticket.

The airline has teamed up with ebucks so that their members can purchase tickets with their loyalty points via the internet. Kulula.com is the only low cost carrier with a frequent flyer programme, rewarding frequent flyers - the programme is called Kulula Jetsetters and members accumulate points which are converted to "kulula moohla", which can then be used to pay for further air tickets or car hire.

In short, Kulula aims to be easy going, and they definitely are - from the humour of the pilots and hostesses, to the graphics which appear on their aircraft fleet and all their marketing efforts - their new marketing campaign says it all - 'you gotta love flying.'
