Best Practices To Go Camping Around New Zealand

Some people are scared of camping. Generally they will be under the misapprehension that camping has to be uncomfortable and undignified. Who wants to sleep on the ground in the cold when they can stay in a fluffy bed in a nice, warm hotel room?

But things have changed. Outdoor shops offer a huge range of camping equipment and outdoor supplies to make even the most basic campground comfortable.

Camping in New Zealand brings you closer to the spectacular scenery, the amazing plant and wildlife, and the feeling of being on a real adventure!

The most basic requirement for camping is a tent and sleeping bag. New Zealand has varying weather conditions so it is essential you choose equipment to suit the climate. Another consideration is what you plan to do on your camping holiday. If you are hiking, then choose something lightweight and durable, but if you have a car and plenty of room, then comfort would be the highest priority.

Appropriate clothing is another essential. Whether it is hot or cold, it is best to dress in layers. In cold weather, layers will trap the heat and keep you warm, and in hot weather, you can strip off layers as required. Make sure you invest in an excellent pair of boots and waterproofs. It's guaranteed you will be miserable if you are wet and have sore feet. Hats are also a great investment. Sleep in one if you're really cold and it will help retain 80% of your body heat.

Choosing a campsite is next on the agenda. There are three options for camping in New Zealand: commercial campsites, Department of Conservation (DOC) campsites, and areas for free camping. Investigate which option is best for you and plan ahead accordingly.

Once you have decided on the campsite, find out what facilities it offers. You will need to buy suitable camping equipment before you leave, such as a cooler, a gas stove, first aid kit, utility knife, matches or lighter, torches, lanterns, chairs, pans and crockery.

Protect yourself from nature. Bring insect repellant! You will spend a lot of time outdoors, and so do the bugs. Also remember that the New Zealand sun is harsh, so slap on the sunscreen.

Camping is all about acclimatization. If you plan ahead and ensure you have all the necessary outdoor supplies and camping equipment, then it could be the best holiday you will ever have. Where else can you relax under the stars, enjoying the fresh air and the taste of camp-cooked food? And swatting a mossie or two while you're sitting there is all part of the fun.
