Getting A Visa
Most consulates have websites now where Visa forms are downloadable. That makes it super easy to get everything ready so you can get the visa without problems.

Fun Visa facts: The Indian Consulate in Toronto only wants cash. The six month tourist visa is CDN$62. You will have to get a number and wait in a non-line until your number comes up. You will likely have to wait a long time. When I went I realized it was a lovely aperitif to the waiting I will have to do once in India. Take it as a practice round. Meditate. Breathe. Read. Or: Go before they open. Go 15 minutes before they open and you won’t have to wait as long.

You will have to pick up your visa later. I was impressed, however, at how fast they got processed. I went on Friday morning and it was ready Monday afternoon. When you go to pick up the visa, follow the same go-early-to-avoid-waiting procedure. Luckily, this is a much quicker process.

Finally, don’t get the visa too early. The visa is valid from the day it is processed. I didn’t know that (!) and was so gung-ho in my preparatory zeal that I went just over seven months before I would return and had to get a second visa to cover the month that I missed. It wasn’t funny at the time after the long line…
