Melbourne Cup's Winners

The Melbourne Cup is called 'the race that stops a nation'. On the first Tuesday in November at 2pm (AEST) most folks Down Under, and fans in many other countries with horse racing fraternities, are in front of their television, radio or Internet to witness who will be the next horse to make equine history in Australia.

Australians on holiday in Bali were not to be outdone, and turned up, all dressed up for the occasion, at several venues around Bali. As part of its new image after its recent massive building and refurbishment programme Canggu Club put on a Lawn Party in Bali to almost outdo Melbourne and certainly compete with Ascot for stylish dresses and millinery delights.

In case you missed the end, the winners were:

  1. Protectionist (GER) ridden by Ryan Moore (GB) 56.5kg
  2. Red Cadeaux (GB) with jockey Gérald Mossé (FR) 57kg
  3. Who Shot Thebarman (NZ) with Glen Boss atop 55kg
  4. Signoff (IRE) with jockey João Moreira (BRA) 51kg
  5. Willing Foe (US) with jockey James McDonald 55kg

Another worthy winner at Canggu was the Solemen Foundation which received Rp. 268.5 million (US$22,375) from the proceeds of raffles, auctions and sweepstakes to enable them to help Bali´s less fortunate residents.

Punters dug deep into their pockets and purses to pay for parties and buy raffle tickets which raised this prize money.

Moët Marquee Tickets sold for Rp. 1,650,000 per person (US$143). This gave punters the right to an affair delivering delicious canapés, a three-course lunch on the lawn and three hours of free flow Moët Champagne, Heineken beer, Babich wines, soft drinks and water.

The Chandon Cocktail Party offered Moët & Chandon Champagne, Babich wines, beer and an array of canapés while enjoying the race and the passing parade of race day fashion.

Multiple screens around the Club meant everyone present was able to enjoy the race day action beamed from Melbourne, Australia.

Entertainment by Ian Moss of 'Cold Chisel' and Natalie Gillespie from 'Yothu Yindi' accompanied dancing throughout the afternoon and into the evening as the race day party continued until 8:00 pm.

A part of the proceeds from the event was donated to the community enhancement work of Solemen.

The Canggu Club’s support for Solemen Indonesia forms part of a range of programmes aimed to “give back” to the people of Bali. Each year the Canggu Club supports the Jodie O’Shea Orphanage. Children from the orphanage have been hosted to “fun days” at the Club experiencing the thrill of bouncing on a trampoline and playing ten-pin bowling.

One of Bali’s best known and trusted charities, Solemen was founded in 2010 by barefoot humanitarians Robert Epstone and Beat Schmid de Gruneck. A Bali-based non-profit organization working with registered agencies (yayasan) working to alleviate suffering among the disadvantaged in Bali, Solemen runs a sustainable nutrition programme together with direct assistance to some of the island’s neediest families. In several villages they have set up perma-culture programmes so that locals can grow their own nutritious fruit and vegetables.

Christmas is coming and in the tradition of the “Season of Giving” December 1, 2014 will see the traditional Christmas tree reappear in the Canggu Club’s foyer, displaying nearly one hundred “Christmas tags.” Each tag features a picture of a child at the Jodie O’Shea orphanage.

Canggu Club members, patrons and staff are invited to select a child for whom to buy a Christmas present. Later in the month, Santa arrives at the Club with his helpers to present each child with his or her personalised gift.
