The Heart of Borneo Declaration: Protecting forests for future generations

TIME : 2016/2/25 13:59:17

An important declaration was signed yesterday in Bali. The Heart of Borneo Declaration, signed by Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei, aims to protect the forest areas that staddle the 3 countries.

Indonesia has the worst deforestation problem in the world. This new declaration covers an area of 220,000 square kilometres of equatorial rainforests, which are rich in biodiversity. Exactly how this declaration will be enforced remains to be seen, but this is a great step. Here’s more from the WWF.

Illegal logging plus the annual burning of bush, creates the ‘SE Asian haze’, much of it coming from Borneo. A BBC article talks about how some of the peatlands are being revitalized.
