Learn about the early days of life in Hokkaido in a fun and interactive way by visiting the Historical Village of Hokkaido (Kaitaku-no Mura), which recreates life in the mid 19th to early 20th centuries. Enter the old Sapporo Station building and step back in time, seeing real buildings moved to the site from around Hokkaido. The village is divided into several theme sections. The first is a town, which you can view on foot or from a horse-drawn trolley. There are 31 old wood and stone buildings like offices, stores, warehouses, and a school.

Take time to browse inside to see what the settlers used in their everyday lives. Another section is a fishing village, which has 4 buildings including a fisherman’s home and a storehouse. The farm village has 15 buildings, including houses, granaries, and a shrine. The mountain village only has three sites, but they are quite unusual for a western visitor: a woodcutter’s hut, a charcoal maker’s kiln, and a locomotive shed.

In addition to touring the extensive grounds, visitors can enjoy many celebrations and activities throughout the year, such as Hana Matsuri, the Girl’s Festival, a harvest festival at the shrine in the autumn, and making mochi rice cakes for the new year. There is no restaurant on the grounds, but it is acceptable to bring your own food.
