Hin Ta & Hin Yai (Grandfather & Grandmother Rock) Ko Samui

TIME : 2016/2/24 18:33:24

There is a rocky outcrop at the south end of Lamai Bay which features on all Ko Samui day tours. Thai and overseas tourists alike smile and line up to have their photographs taken at Hin Ta (Grandfather Rock) and Hin Yai (Grandmother Rock). These two rock formations are in close proximity and are renowned for their resemblance to the male and female sexual organs. They might seem an unlikely tourist attraction, but they always seem to raise a few ribald comments and ‘talung‘ (Thai word for saucy or risqué) talk.

The pathway down to the rocks is lined with vendors selling souvenirs and food. The local sweet snacks are particularly popular with the Thai tourists. Although the rocks by themselves aren’t spectacular, they do make for a pleasant diversion from the beach as part of a half-day or day tour of Samui island. Tours typically include a visit to the rocks combined with a trip to a waterfall, the Big Buddha and an elephant or monkey show.
