Chingchok Update and One More Thai Superstition

TIME : 2016/2/24 18:43:20

For all those animal lovers out there, you’ll be pleased to know that the chingchok that fell on my head has suffered no ill effects from his recent kamikaze expedition. Pictured on the right, the little chap has happily taken up residence in my bathroom and seems content enough with his new surroundings.

Following on from the saga of the falling lizard and the Friday 13th scenario, I began digging a bit deeper. It seems that only a minority of Thai people actually believe that bad luck is associated with Friday 13th (and from what I can gather, some of them do so because the eponymous movie was very popular in Thailand!).

There are various beliefs associated with certain days of the week. For instance, on a Wednesday, you should not cut your hair or nails because it’s bad luck. I found this out today having already visited the barber this week – yes, you’ve guessed it, on Wednesday. I want to know why the barber shop was open if he knows it’s going to bring bad luck to his customers. These Thais are pragmatic; never let an old superstition get in the way of making money.
