Regular bus service from Chiang Mai Arcade bus terminal to Bangkok (696 km), Chiang Rai (182 km), Mae Sai, Mae Hong Son (342 km), Golden Triangle (9 km North of Chiang Saen), Pha Yao (222 km), Chiang Khong, Lamphun (21 km), Lampang (92 km) and to other towns in the North, Northwest as well as to Udon Thani (in the NE and a transit point for Nong Khai/Laos).

It’s best to book your bus ticket at the Arcade to avoid getting ripped off by the many travel agents which in Thailand could mean paying 2-3 times the correct fare. Chiang Mai is also connected by rail to Bangkok (751 km/13 hrs) and by Thai Airways to Bangkok (1 hr), Chiang Rai (182 km), Mai Hong Son, Phitsanulok, Phuket, Kunming in China. And by Lao Aviation to Vientiane and Luang Prabang.

Bicycle/Motorbike

The most convenient way to travel in CM or in any town or city in Thailand except Bangkok. Prices vary between 20-30 Baht/day for a bicycle and 100-150 Baht/day for a 100cc Honda Dream bike. Wear a helmet or pay a fine of 200 Baht if you don’t and remember this, you will get caught. In Pattaya, you are allowed to ride your bike for the day after you pay the fine!

Songtaew

The mostly red Songtaew bus will take you anywhere in CM for 8-10 Baht, 20 Baht for longer trips. The yellow, blue, red or white Songtaew will take you out of town.
