TIME : 2016/2/23 17:42:40
Fizzing with a vibrant nightlife, colorful culture, and landmarks from its epic history, Newcastle is proving more and more popular with tourists all the time. And then there's the shopping. Being one of the coolest cities in the UK, Newcastle isn't short on places to stock up on the latest styles. With an array of independent stores and boutiques scattered across the landscape, Newcastle offers all the retail therapy you'd want.Central Arcade

Little more than a minute away from Eldon Square – depending on how many bags you're carrying – is the gorgeous Central Arcade. Built way back in the 1830s, this exquisitely designed Edwardian shopping arcade oozes elegance and charm, transporting visitors back in time to an era when good taste and perfectionism were of the essence. Having operated at various times as a commercial exchange, a newsroom, and an art gallery, it’s now the best place in town to pick up a quirky gift or souvenir. Entrances to this immaculate glass-domed thoroughfare can be found on Grainger Street, Gray Street, and Market Street.

Grainger Market

At the soul of the city’s historic centre is the covered Grainger Market, resting between Grainger Street and Clayton Street. Running week in week out all through the year, this cultural staple was opened in 1835 and has been providing the local population with meat and veg ever since. However, in recent times the market has expanded its remit, adapting to house jewellery stores, footwear specialists, gift shops, independent clothing stalls, books and DVD traders, and all sorts more. Open Monday to Saturday, it blends an unforgettable taste of the Newcastle of old with a necessary punch of the new.

Metrocentre

Less than a 15-minute drive away from the city’s core is the famous Metrocentre, one of Europe’s largest shopping and leisure centres. With more than 340 shops, you won't amble far without spotting a store to duck into. Whether you’re hunting a boutique-style bargain or want to splurge on some designer labels, you won’t be disappointed. Places to stop, breathe, chat, and eat are plentiful, and should you be craving a little post-shop entertainment you can always take in a film. You’ll also find a well-equipped play area to help the young ones burn off some energy.

Northumberland Street

Northumberland Street is a shopper’s delight at the heart of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne. A 3-minute walk from both Monument and Haymarket Metro stations, it’s home to a vast array of major high street names and is a great place to fill out your wardrobe at a reasonable price. Fenwick’s department store – one of the largest of its kind in the region – enjoys a prime Northumberland Street location. Plenty of cafés and restaurants contribute to a typically colorful and lively Newcastle atmosphere. You can expect a customary dose of streetside entertainment and a pleasant mesh of festive bright lights at Christmas time.
