Liverpool is a cosmopolitan city that's developed into one of the gastronomic hotspots of northern England. From independent bistros serving simple classics, to sophisticated restaurants boasting modern British cuisine, Liverpool has a variety of eateries to suit all budgets and tastes. For a true flavour of Liverpool, try the local meat and vegetable "scouse" stew - the dish that inspired the nickname "Scouser" for Liverpool locals.Typical dishes

Famous local delicacies include Southport shrimp, Wirral asparagus and Knowsley lamb. Scouse stew can be found in many of the city’s bustling cafes.

Hope Street

Hope Street runs through the south of the city centre and is easily the best place to locate fine dining restaurants. London Carriage Works specialises in sourcing produce from within a 25 mile radius of the restaurant, from sea bass caught just off the coast to local pork with oyster mushrooms and pancetta. 60 Hope Street is a modern British Restaurant set in a classic Georgian Townhouse, where dishes include succulent steaks and grilled lemon sole with dill butter and new potatoes.

Chinatown

On the southern edge of the city centre, Liverpool’s Chinatown is home to the oldest Chinese community in Europe. The Yuet Ben restaurant has been family-run since 1968 and serves sweet, hot, and sour food from across the northern region of China, from ink fish in black bean sauce to sliced duck and pineapple. For fans of heat, Chilli Chilli serves the hot and spicy food typical of the Sichuan province in China, from fried chicken laced with Sichuan peppercorns to lip-tingling chilli prawns.

Albert Dock

The Albert Dock is now a major tourist attraction due to years of rejuvenation and investment. Whether you’re visiting the ships in the harbour or the Liverpool Tate Gallery, there are plenty of cheap, high-quality places to refuel. The grill house What’s Cooking has a delectable range of meaty treats including shredded pork sandwiches, grilled steaks and juicy chicken breasts at affordable prices for the family. Albert Dock is also home to Blue Bar, a relaxing place to unwind and look out over the waters of the Mersey while savouring chilli and plum glazed duck breast or teriyaki and ginger spiced fish.

Liverpool City Centre

The city centre is a busy warren of shopping malls, nightclubs and some of the city’s best restaurants. Offering freshly prepared meat-free treats, the Egg Café's menu ranges from tandoori mushrooms with pitta bread to hearty lentil and fennel bakes. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Marco Pierre White’s Steakhouse at the Hotel Indigo is a carnivore's heaven. From native-breed fillet steaks to potted duck with piccalilli, the food is unashamedly meaty and delicious.
