Denver Travel Tips

The mile-high city boasts sleek, urban living surrounded by the Rocky Mountain wilderness. It’s the perfect blend of contemporary style and rich heritage, stretching back to the first pioneers who ventured west. With 300 days of sunshine a year, it’s a hard place to be miserable in, particularly with such a range of cultural activities and wild adventures to get involved in.

Best Time to Travel

Denver is a place of real seasons and dramatic weather, most famous as a winter destination, thanks to the proximity of world-class ski resorts. It certainly pulls off the winter wonderland atmosphere with flair – when it’s dusted with snow and playing host to holiday festivities, Denver is truly magical. But equally, when the summer brings long, hot days and balmy evenings, the city’s parks and concert venues really come into their own, while the mountains are ripe for hiking and biking.

Not to Miss

You might fancy some retail therapy or just want to stroll amid the sights of downtown – either way, the 16th Street Mall is a must-visit. 16th Street is a completely pedestrianized zone in the heart of Denver, brimming with department stores, boutiques, and entertainment venues. The Capitol building provides an impressive backdrop. Whether you'd like to sip a coffee and watch the world go by, or you want to hit the shops, no visit to Denver is complete without a wander here.

Getting around

Denver International Airport is one of the busiest in the US, and serves close to 180 destinations around the world. It’s located about 20 miles northeast of downtown Denver, with a fleet of efficient transport options to get you there. Hiring a car can be the most convenient choice, particularly for exploring the mountains. However, The Light Rail system and the metropolitan bus network provide good coverage across the city. There’s also a free shuttle chugging around 16th street, connecting many of the main downtown attractions.

Cuisine

Denver is a true foodie city. The dining scene is diverse, with everything from Japanese haute cuisine in trendy Larimer Square restaurants, to country shacks serving up finger-lickin’ ribs out in the mountains. But whatever the style of food and restaurant, there’s a deep passion for cuisine here, and many of the restaurants are independent, chef-owned establishments. So whether you want a Wild West feast or a gourmet taste of the east, come dine in Denver.

Customs and etiquette

Denver is a multicultural and tolerant city, with a rich history made up of a wide diversity of peoples and cultures. Generally, you’ll find attitudes here to be relaxed and welcoming. Be prepared for the altitude – at a mile high, the air is thinner and drier in Denver than it is at sea level, so drink plenty of water, and be aware that alcohol will hit you harder than usual. Out in the mountains, a respect for nature is important, so just leave things tidy as you go. Fast Facts
