Molokai Mule Ride

TIME : 2016/2/25 15:11:43

Molokai Mule Ride – This is a spectacular ride down 1,700 feet of the highest sea cliffs in the world (recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records). During your 2.9 mile trip you will learn about a community that has been hidden from the world for years.

This used to be a leper community and you will learn from your guides about the struggles, lives and times of the courageous people who lived there. You will get to see the grave site of the historic Belgium Priest Father Damien. Also you will see the church (St. Philomena Church) where Father Damien preached to his banished congregation.

What to Expect
Your day will begin at the stables and you will take a mule ride down the trail to Kalaupapa National Historic Park. There you will have the opportunity to go shopping, take a look at the historic village and have a picnic lunch. Then in the afternoon it will be time to mount your mule and head back down the trail to the stables.

Average Costs
The fee is currently $165.00 (price will increase to $175.00 on November 1st 2008). These fees are collected at the end of your tour. Lunch is provided in the cost of the tour but you can bring extra money to purchase souvenirs.

How To Get There
Fly into the Molokai Airport and then you can either take a cab (approx $25) or take one of the airport transfer tour companies $11-13 per person each way. If you don’t want to fly you can take the overnight ferry from Maui and if you do the transportation rates from the harbor are the same as from the airport.

Hours of Operation
Molokai Mule Ride and historic tour is open from 8:00am to 3:00pm Monday through Saturday. You must book your tour at least two weeks in advance for groups of 5 or more. Space is very limited so if you wait until you reach the island to try to book your tour you may not get a space.
