Maynard Dixon in Southern California

TIME : 2016/2/27 17:24:20

With a black Stetson on his head, cowboy boots on his feet, and a cigar dangling from his mouth, Maynard Dixon was as much a Western icon as his artwork. Perhaps no artist better embodies the independent spirit of the American West.

At the Pasadena Museum of California Art, Maynard Dixon: Masterpieces from Brigham Young University and Private Collections features 108 of the early-20th-century artist’s illustrations, paintings, and drawings, including 12 classic covers that he did for Sunset magazine and several works never seen before by the public.

The collection highlights Dixon’s Western imagery: rugged rodeo cowboys, wild mustangs on the open plains, shadows on craggy canyons, and desert skies that go on for miles.

Jun 1–Aug 12, 2007 (closed Mon–Tue); $6; 490 E. Union St., Pasadena; 626/568-3665.
