Paris's Musee Guimet Guimet

Paris's Musée Guimet opens new doors to art — from Afghanistan to Vietnam Though we may scorn the colonial pretensions of collector Émile Guimet, we can only be grateful for his legacy: the Musée Guimet. France's national museum of Asian art, established in 1899 and closed for renovation in 1996, is open once again. The Guimet became famous for its ceramics and Khmer sculpture, and also for being a compartmentalized mess. Newly reorganized, it radiates light, coherence, and breathing space for its astonishing art. Musée National des Arts Asiatiques—Guimet, 6 Place d'Iéna, Paris; 33-1/56-52-53-00.
