Hermès in Shanghai

What do you get when Hermès goes to Shanghai? Shang Xia—Mandarin for “up and down.” The sleek 1,345-square-foot store, with its white oak floors and cloud-like molded walls, was developed by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma under the direction of designer Jiang Qiong Er. Inside you’ll find a collection made using indigenous Chinese materials: handwoven Mongolian cashmere and felt coats inspired by the Han dynasty; silk-blend kimono-style dresses; leather slippers; dragon-themed pearl jewelry; and porcelain, jade, and bamboo tea sets. It’s a nod to the country’s past, present, and future.
