Keswick

Keswick (pronounced “Kezick”), situated at the uppermost tip of Derwentwater, is the hub of the northern part of the Lake District. There are a few local points of interest, but attractions like the Pencil Museum are unlikely to detain you long and this market town functions best as a point of departure for tours of the magnificent nearby countryside.

Walking tours range from sedate circumnavigations of Derwentwater to a more demanding stroll up Skiddaw, one of England’s highest mountains. And once you’ve hung up your hiking boots, Keswick’s traditional pubs offer fine ale and hearty meals.

Practical Info

Getting to Keswick from either Windermere or Carlisle, the nearest transport hubs, will take around half an hour by car, a little longer by bus. A launch service calls at Keswick and six other points on Derwentwater.
