Chapel of the Holy Cross

TIME : 2016/2/18 10:52:26

Situated between spectacular, statuesque natural stone columns 3 miles south of town, this modern 1956 Roman Catholic chapel soars from the rock like a slice of the land itself. Architect Marguerite Brunwig Staude followed the tradition of Frank Lloyd Wright – its wall of glass and the perch it occupies offers a dramatic perspective on the landscape, and the architecture is stunning. Though there are no traditional services, the church offers a 'Taize prayer service' on Mondays at 5pm.

This is one of Sedona's most popular tourist destinations; to avoid summer crowds, come first thing in the morning. Not only is the church itself tiny, just a skinny rectangle designed to blend into and look like the surrounding red rock, but parking is difficult. Follow the signs and keep going past the small parking lots until the winding road dead-ends at the parking lot directly below the chapel; if there's no room, turn around and park wherever you can and hoof it up.
