An Alternative Institution

In the heart of Montreal’s Quartier Latin, Foufounes Électriques, or simply Les Foufs, is the oldest alternative rock venue in the city and has been a cultural institution since 1983, with its four bars, performance space, and art gallery. The three friends who established Les Foufs wanted to provide a home for emerging artists, both musical and in other media, and it quickly became a center for the city’s punk and goth scenes. Its following extended, however, to also embrace new wave, reggae, and grunge musicians. Over the years, Green Day, Marianne Faithfull, and Nirvana have all performed at Les Foufs. In addition to live acts, the mood each day of the week depends on the DJs at the helm, with rock ‘n’ roll on Tuesdays, Top 40 on Thursdays, and punk and metal on Fridays.
