Afareaitu Waterfalls

Located on the southeast coast of Moorea, the Afareaitu Waterfalls are located inland from the village of Afareaitu and are actually two separate falls accessed by two different roads. One resides on the Putoa Stream and the other on the Vaioro Stream.

For both waterfalls, once the dirt road ends you'll complete a challenging 20 to 30 minutes uphill trek through lush jungle, mud, volcanic rock and sometimes knee-deep streams to reach the waterfalls. Your other option is to take a 4x4. The bigger and more popular waterfall is the one located on the Putoa Stream, which is over 100 feet high and plunges into a natural rock pool ideal for swimming.

Along with bringing your bathing suit, remember to bring your wallet as there is sometimes a small fee required to hike to the waterfall. To access the road to this trek, take the unmarked road between the Ah Sing Market and the protestant church. Although the journey to get to this attraction isn't easy, it is worth it for the experience of discovering a hidden jungle waterfall.
